Reports To: Primary Head of Section / Wellbeing Coach
Position Description:
- The Learning Support Assistant is an entry-level role that provides targeted support for students with known or suspected special educational needs. As SABAH.school gradually develops its learning support provision, this role is intended to help students experience success, build confidence and strengthen key skills through purposeful small-group and individual support.
Responsibilities
Student Support
- Provide individual, paired and small-group support for students with identified or suspected additional learning needs.
- Plan and deliver simple, purposeful learning experiences that help students practise key skills, close gaps and experience success.
- Break learning into manageable steps so that students can access tasks more successfully.
- Help students build confidence, independence and readiness to participate in classroom learning.
- Recognise that the role is focused on student support and intervention, not on general classroom assistance for the teacher or delivery of curriculum.
Observation and Monitoring
- Observe students carefully and notice patterns in their learning, behaviour, communication, attention and social interaction.
- Keep simple, clear records of student progress, difficulties, responses to support and useful strategies.
- Share relevant observations with teachers and school leaders in a factual and professional way.
- Support the early identification of students who may require further monitoring or support.
Access to Learning
- Prepare or adapt simple support materials that help students engage with learning more successfully.
- Provide opportunities for students to revisit, rehearse and strengthen important skills.
- Support students to remain calm, engaged and ready to learn during support sessions.
- Help students feel capable, included and successful as learners.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Homeroom and Subject Teachers, Teaching Assistants and school leaders to understand student needs and priorities.
- Communicate regularly with teachers about student progress, useful strategies and next steps.
- Contribute to discussions about students who may require additional support.
- Support consistency in the use of agreed strategies across the school day.
Professional Practice
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all matters relating to students and families.
- Build positive, respectful relationships with students.
- Carry out the role with patience, care and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Engage in ongoing professional learning related to inclusive practice, child development and additional learning needs.
- Reflect on the effectiveness of support provided and show willingness to learn as the school’s provision develops over time.
Line Management & Role Support
- Work with the Wellbeing Coach to receive ongoing coaching in student support areas
- Work with the Wellbeing Coach to manage schedule and workload in line with student needs and school priorities
- Contribute to the ongoing development of student support plans at the school
- Receive feedback from the Wellbeing Coach and Senior Primary Leaders on the implementation and effectiveness of support programmes
Requirements
- Degree in Education, Psychology, Child Development or a related field.
- Very good spoken and written English.
- A very good level of Russian and Azerbaijani is preferred.
- Experience working with primary-aged students in a school or child-centred setting is preferred.
- Basic understanding of child development, additional learning needs and inclusive practice.
- Ability to work patiently and positively with students who require extra support.
- Strong communication, organisation and observation skills.
- Commitment to helping students build confidence, experience success and make progress.
